NY1 Interview: How Your Social Media Presence Can Affect Your Job Search
NY1 interviewed Lindsey Pollak about how job candidates should use their social media presence to boost their job search. From Facebook to Twitter, what’s known as your social media footprint can have a major impact on landing a job, or losing it to someone else. Business reporter, Diane King Hall, looks at ways that your life on the web can affect your livelihood today. More than ninety percent of recruiters are looking for potential employees by using social media. But it's not just recruiters, everyone from potential bosses to coworkers are turning into investigative reporters on the web, making your social media footprint more important than ever. So you want to present yourself as if a recruiter or a colleague will see those profiles. So if you're okay with somebody coming across your presence on social networks, you're going to be fine. If you're worried that somebody might come across those, I would probably go in and clean them up. Maybe think twice before you post or tweet. Would you do it in front of your boss? Would you do it in front of your colleagues? If the answer is yes, I would be completely comfortable doing that, then I think it's okay to post it on social media, which can be tricky territory when it comes to viral dance videos, a pic. Apparently, you can't just do it for the vine to get a job in social media, but you might want to get your tweet game up. Tom Tereko says he was discovered by a recruiter buy his online presence. “But I would say that the number one way to kind of break into this field is just really be passionate and use the platforms. So be active on Twitter. Post on Instagram. Make gifs on tumblr.” Experts also say it's a misconception to believe that it's only important to have a profile if you work in social media or public relations. “I’ve heard industries as diverse as banking, healthcare, politics, accounting, you never know who's going to be checking out your profile. “Wanting to connect with people and share things with your friends is all this time and now we just have new kind of channels and pathways to do that.” Like a new age water cooler people want to know the scuttlebutt but don't over share your thoughts. We all remember the episode of Justine Sacco a former PR exec who's career imploded after making a racist tweet. For best results, fill out your profile completely. Make thoughtful status updates, and check for typos before hitting enter.

NBC Nightly News - Graduating Millennials and the Job Market
Lindsey Pollak is the leading expert on managing and marketing to Millennials (the generation born in the 1980s and '90s). What does the tight job market mean for the class of 2009? Lindsey shares her thoughts on NBC Nightly News. TRANSCRIPT: We mentioned this story before the break. This year’s college graduation class will be the largest in American history and they're all going to need work and they are entering the worst job market in modern history, and so we asked NBC’s Maria Manounos to look at the prospects. The way Daniel McGill figures it, she sent out 100 resumes for every year she attended college. 400 in all and she’s still jobless. That’s my new job, is to look for a job. And she’s about to get a lot of company. In a few weeks, 1.15 million graduates will enter the workforce, just as employers shed millions of jobs. They just take in information for when everything picks up, and you know, starts to get better. And with growing numbers delaying retirement, these grads are competing for even fewer jobs and competing against more experienced talent. U.S.C. Senior, Whitney Middleton’s job search has been like a final exam that will never end. “It’s kind of like weight on your shoulders and it’s only getting heavier and heavier. And the communications major isn’t likely to get that weight off her shoulders any time soon. Employers say they plan to hire 22% fewer grads this year. This is the generation where every kid got a trophy on the soccer team, so they had a lot of success, and now suddenly, we’re in a situation where all of that has changed very very quickly. Students graduating now expect lower salaries than their peers graduating in better economic times. But what they might not expect? Studies of past regressions show those salaries never catch up. With this market, if I can take anything with any kind of experience, I’ll take it. A grim reality for some, but for many, a better alternative of no job at all. “I want to keep trying, I hate to just quit you know?” But it’s hard when everyday you hear “no, no, no, we’re not hiring”. Which means for the class of ‘09, the days of cramming aren’t over yet. Maria Manounos, NBC News, Northridge, CA
