Becoming a Culturally Responsive Teacher

04:58
How do you reach students who are culturally and racially different from you? This course provides thought-provoking background and practical suggestions for teachers seeking the answer to this question. Participants explore their own assumptions about race, class, and culture; and learn strategies for creating classrooms that are culturally inviting to all. Classroom footage illustrates principles of Culturally Responsive Teaching, including affirming students' cultural connections, stressing collectivity as well as individuality, and managing the classroom with firm, consistent, caring control. Join presenter Gary Howard as he leads workshop participants in activities that explore historical and personal perspectives. What groups were empowered to take part in government when the Constitution was drafted? What voices have been added to the conversation since then, and how has a history of disenfranchisement affected the ways in which we view each other? Mr. Howard makes a compelling case for knowing who your students really are, advocating an approach that celebrates culture and history, rather than requiring students to give up parts of their identities in order to survive in school. Finally, we hear from teachers who are trying a new approach to cultural difference, and visit their classrooms to see the results. When Diversity Can Be Bad For Your Organization by Susan Haywood from HR Blueprints

04:21
Oh the irony; striving for a diverse workforce only to encourage these new employees to conform to the current modes of thinking. That's not very diverse at all! What if employers thought of every employee as an individual who has valuable, unique ideas and that allowed them to share their fresh perspectives without trying to conform to a current workplace norm? That's when we can truly benefit from diversity.

In 2011, more than 40 percent of Allstate's philanthropic endeavors supported multicultural communities around the country. Diverse Outdoor Leaders Institute (DOLI)

03:09
The Diverse Outdoor Leaders Institute, (DOLI) is a unique collaboration of organizations acting together to form a network that develops curriculum and trains a cadre of elite wilderness leaders of color that can effectively engage under-represented minorities and urban youth in National Parks Youth Programs. Staff from a multitude of outdoor and youth serving organizations came together to create a training institute like no other, dedicated to enlarging the pool of outdoor professionals who come from backgrounds similar to the underserved youth we are trying to reach. "The grand show is eternal. It is always sunrise somewhere. The dew is never dried all at once. A shower is forever falling. Vapor is ever rising. Eternal sunrise, eternal dawn and gloaming on sea and continents and islands, each in its turn as the round earth rolls." - John Muir And so it is in our National Parks, spread throughout the 50 states and territories, which were established largely in part to Muir's advocacy. Muir's observations beg the questions as to why we allocate a significant percentage of our national budget to sustaining these natural resources. Now it is time to ask the deeper question - once we do allocate so much of our national budget to sustain these resouces - are these resources being equitably promoted to all Americans? The answer to the first part of the questions is clear to anyone who has spent time in any of the 435 parks maintained by the National Parks Service. The grandeur of Yosemite, the Grand Canyon and the Grand Tetons are world renowned. Lesser known parks such as City of Rocks, the Epu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site, and Point Reyes National Seashore are equally impactful. The answer to the second part of the quandary, whether the National Parks are being equitably promoted to all Americans, is clearly no. A quick visual survey of park visitors would reveal that there are few people of color. When asked, many people of color report that they are unaware of the Park system, or they do not feel as though they are welcomed at these glorious places. DOLI's mission is to change that perspective, in conjunction with White House directives, President Obama and his administration are aware that engaging young people from all backgrounds in nature based education in our country's wilderness areas is good for the youth, their families and the communities in which they live. This realization led the President to launch America's Great Outdoor's Initiative to promote and support community-level efforts to conserve outdoor spaces and to reconnect Americans to the outdoors. Unfortunately most National Parks do not have the resources and contacts with urban and inner-city community based organizations to attract the urban youth who could benefit so much from experiencing the National Parks. In addition once these populations are in the parks, Rangers and park staff often lack the experience and soft skills to effectively relate to these people and frequently spend most of their time managing and instructing youth instead of mentoring, leading and relating with them. Many National Park programs aggressively reach out to urban and underserved youth, but lack culturally relevant instructors that can easily connect with the students. While a demand for these culturally relevant instructors exists, the Park Service severely lacks a reliable source to access these instructors. The DOLI program will provide the parks with adjunct, temporary program staff that are trained to meet a higher standard of outdoor instruction that includes purpose, compassion and stewardship. What DOLI will do: The intent of DOLI is to create a strong pool of physically fit, knowledgeable instructors of color, who have socioeconomic backgrounds similar to the youth they will serve and who come from the communities that we are trying to reach. Throughout the entire National Park Service nearly every Park suffers from not having access to qualified diverse instructors that can safely and effectively (emotionally and physically) bring urban youth groups into the Park System. In addition many of these DOLI instructors can be hired as conservation crew leaders and outdoor education instructors in one of hundreds of youth serving organizations. DOLI instructors will be the main agents for facilitating the NPS Roots and Wings outreach program for inner-city youth. "Islam: Everything you wanted to know" Irshad Manji at Wanderlust's Speakeasy

01:11:34
The New York Times calls Irshad Manji "Osama bin Laden's worst nightmare." Oprah Winfrey's magazine has given Irshad its first annual Chutzpah Award for "audacity, nerve, boldness and conviction." She takes both as compliments. Irshad is Director of the Moral Courage Project at New York University's School of Public Service. The project teaches young leaders to challenge intellectual conformity and self-censorship. She is also a senior fellow with the European Foundation for Democracy, which promotes universal human rights and freedom of conscience. We were very honored to have Irshad visit us at Wanderlust Stratton to discuss unity, community, and communication. She opened the floor to questions about "Islam! Everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask" and what ensued was an extremely honest and participatory discussion about how we can create greater understanding and compassion in our world. She recently spoke on a panel (Sept 2012) with His Holiness the Dalai Lama about finding the "Common Ground for Peace", and even more recently (Nov 2012) was awarded the "Humanist of the Year" Award from the Society for Ethical Culture. We encourage you to learn more about her Moral Courage Project, by signing up on her website and fanning up the social media pages below: https://www.irshadmanji.com/ https://www.facebook.com/irshadmanji https://twitter.com/irshadmanji Wanderlust Festival is also endebted to Hay House (http://www.hayhouse.com) who helped us realize the entire 2012 Speakeasy Lecture Series across all four festivals (Stratton, VT in June 2012; Copper Mountain, CO in July; Squaw Valley, CA in late July; and Whistler, BC, Canada in August). With Hay House's amazing roster of speakers (which you can witness in person at their incredible "I Can Do It" events), it's no wonder that they helped elevate the conversation at Wanderlust's Speakeasy this summer. We encourage you to stay tuned to the Hay House FB feed to make sure you know the next time one of their authors is speaking near you (https://www.facebook.com/hayhouse). Wanderlust is also grateful to our Speakeasy Vermont partner, Omega. Founded in 1977, Omega Institute for Holistic Studies is the nation's most trusted source for wellness and personal growth. As a nonprofit organization, Omega offers diverse and innovative educational experiences that inspire an integrated approach to personal and social change. The ChartMaxx Difference - Valley Hospital Document Management - Remote Access, Remote Coding

04:21
http://care360.questdiagnostics.com/Service-Oriented-Architecture-SOA.cfm Valley Hospital Talks about their implementation and experience with ChartMaxx. As a healthcare organization, your investments in information technology have occurred over time and across multiple departments and systems. Nearly every organization in healthcare faces the challenges of integrating those systems for the sharing and reporting of data. You've identified gaps, and every day they stand in the way of your team's efficiency, driving up your fixed costs. ChartMaxx ECM with Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) offers a solution to your document and data management problems across diverse systems. What if you could get real-time retrieval and display of a document from any software program in your enterprise? SOA enables that kind of technology with some added bonuses. In the past, data retrieval required logging in and out of different systems. More recently, this challenge has been met with bi-directional data sharing. But there have been drawbacks to each of these approaches. Data sharing can result in multiple copies of the same document, creating a versioning nightmare. SOA provides a solution that ensures access to the "document of truth" every time.

Katherine Klein of The Wharton School on diversity

10:36
Measuring diversity in terms of broad demographic categories such as gender, race or age fails to take into account the underlying dynamics that can play a more decisive role within groups of people -- diversity in attitudes, skills, knowledge and power, for example. "It's hard to just say 'oh, there's a group whose members vary in their age' and to really understand what that dynamic will be," says Katherine Klein, Professor of Management at Wharton.
