Diversity in the work place ppt

04:25
Description Slide 1 What is Diversity in the work place? Have you encountered it before? Slide 2 In this presentation I will be talking about diversity in the work place, Benefits it has on the work place, Challenges it may cause, possible solutions and my own experiences. Slide 3 Diversity is the state of having people who are different or who have different cultures in a group of organization. Slide 4 There are many benefits and challenges that come with diversity in the workplace. An organization’s success and competitiveness depends upon its ability to embrace diversity and realize the benefits. When organizations actively assess their handling of workplace diversity issues, develop and implement diversity plans, multiple benefits are reported such as: Increased adaptability greater variety to solutions, Broader service range a collection of skills to provide customers on a global basis, variety of view point a larger pool of ideas, and more effective execution inspires all employees to perform to highest ability. The benefits of diversity in the workplace is not without challenges though, those challenges are communication culture and language barriers. Resistance to change some may refuse to accept the change. Implementation of diversity in the workplace policies they must build and implement a customized strategy to maximize the effects of diversity in the workplace for their particular organization. Successful management of diversity in the workplace Diversity training alone is not sufficient for your organization’s diversity management plan. A strategy must be created and implemented to create a culture of diversity that permeates every department and function of the organization. Slide 5 Here are some recommend solutions according to Diversity in the work place; Benefits, Challenges and Solutions by Josh Greenberg. Ward of change resistance with inclusion by involving every employee possible. Foster an attitude of openness in your organization by encouraging employees to express their ideas and opinions and attribute a sense of equal value to all. Promote diversity in leadership positions this practice provides visibility and realizes the benefits of diversity in the workplace. Utilize diversity training use it as a tool to shape your diversity policy. Launch a customized employee satisfactions survey that provides comprehensive reporting use the results to build and implement successful diversity in the workplace policies. Slide 6 We need diversity in order to have variety of differences between people in an organization. Diversity not only involves how people perceive themselves but how they perceive others, those perceptions affect there interactions. I have been in a few situation where I have been on both sides where I was the majority and the minority. Being a female in a male dominant job is trying at times and can be very challenging but I feel that I do just as good of a job as any given male in the same positions. Being the female in the female dominate job has its benefits not feeling like I am the only one, but I am sure to include the males in my program cause I am sure like I can do a male dominate job they can do female dominate job just as well! Understanding diversity requires being open and receptive to those who are different and being able to overcoming diversity issues is not an easy task. However, addressing these issues in the workplace can provide valuable education and lead to positive change for everyone involved. Slide 7 Resources

Learning styles & the importance of critical self-reflection | Tesia Marshik | TEDxUWLaCrosse

18:15
The belief in learning styles is so widespread, it is considered to be common sense. Few people ever challenge this belief, which has been deeply ingrained in our educational system. Teachers are routinely told that in order to be effective educators, they must identify & cater to individual students' learning styles; it is estimated that around 90% of students believe that they have a specific learning style but research suggests that learning styles don't actually exist! This presentation focuses on debunking this myth via research findings, explaining how/why the belief in learning styles is problematic, and examining the reasons why the belief persists despite the lack of evidence. Dr. Tesia Marshik is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Her research interests in educational psychology include student motivation, self-regulation, and teacher-student relationships. Gordon’s expertise has been from his business psychology base and his work with a wide range of public and private sector organisations over the last 25 years. In this session, participants will learn: • How surveys can be better used to collect feedback to improve the employee experience. • Ways in which gender diversity is promoted through grassroots group mentoring. • Means of reporting diversity metrics in a visually engaging format, in turn making the connection between people and numbers. Thomas Seyfried: Cancer: A Metabolic Disease With Metabolic Solutions

54:41
Emerging evidence indicates that cancer is primarily a metabolic disease involving disturbances in energy production through respiration and fermentation. Cancer is suppressed following transfer of the nucleus from the tumor cell to cytoplasm of normal cells containing normal mitochondria. These findings indicate that nuclear genetic abnormalities cannot be responsible for cancer despite commonly held beliefs in the cancer field. The genomic instability observed in tumor cells and all other recognized hallmarks of cancer are considered downstream epiphenomena of the initial disturbance of cellular energy metabolism. The disturbances in tumor cell energy metabolism can be linked to abnormalities in the structure and function of the mitochondria. Cancer growth and progression can be managed following a whole-body transition from fermentable metabolites, primarily glucose and glutamine, to respiratory metabolites, primarily ketone bodies. This transition will reduce tumor vascularity and inflammation while enhancing tumor cell death. A novel “press-pulse” therapeutic strategy is in development for the non-toxic metabolic management of cancer. Malignant brain cancer in preclinical models and humans will be used to illustrate general concepts. As each individual is a unique metabolic entity, personalization of metabolic therapy as a broadbased cancer treatment strategy will require fine-tuning to match the therapy to an individual’s unique physiology. Thomas N. Seyfried received his Ph.D. in Genetics and Biochemistry from the University of Illinois, Urbana, in 1976. He did his undergraduate work at the University of New England, where he recently received the distinguished Alumni Achievement Award. He also holds a Master’s degree in Genetics from Illinois State University. Thomas Seyfried served with distinction in the United States Army’s First Cavalry Division during the Vietnam War and received numerous medals and commendations. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Neurology at the Yale University School of Medicine and then served on the faculty as an Assistant Professor in Neurology. Other awards and honors have come from such diverse organizations as the American Oil Chemists Society, the National Institutes of Health, The American Society for Neurochemistry, and the Ketogenic Diet Special Interest Group of the American Epilepsy Society. Dr. Seyfried previously served as Chair, Scientific Advisory Committee for the National Tay-Sachs and Allied Diseases Association and presently serves on several editorial boards, including those for Nutrition & Metabolism, Neurochemical Research, the Journal of Lipid Research, and ASN Neuro, where he is a Senior Editor. Dr. Seyfried has over 150 peer-reviewed publications and is the author of the book “Cancer as a Metabolic Disease: On the Origin, Management, and Prevention of Cancer (Wiley Press).”

The Silo Effect: why putting everything in its place isn't such a bright idea

01:24:59
Date: Wednesday 14 October 2015 Time: 6.30-8pm Venue: Sheikh Zayed Theatre, New Academic Building Speaker: Gillian Tett As global organisations become increasingly sophisticated and complex, they also become interlinked but subdivided to increase productivity. Added to this, the human element of competitiveness and protectiveness enhances the conditions for silos to take shape. Drawing on her background in anthropology, award-winning journalist and author Gillian Tett demonstrates how this silo effect can interrupt innovation and even cause disasters and sheds light on how these silos might be overcome. Gillian Tett (@gilliantett) is the US managing editor and columnist at the Financial Times. In 2014 she was named Columnist of the Year in the British Press Awards, and was previously named Journalist of the Year (2009), Business Journalist of the Year (2008) and Wincott Financial Journalist of the Year (2007). In 2011 she was awarded the British Academy’s President’s Medal. Tett is the author of Saving the Sun and Fool’s Gold and most recently The Silo Effect: Why putting everything in its place isn't such a bright idea.
