Diversity in Management
Forward-thinking managers in all industries are taking steps to attract and retain a workforce that reflects the cultural diversity of the population. They take seriously the fact that there is a link between the diversity of the workforce and financial success in the marketplace. Diversity should be understood as the fact of difference that makes a difference. Diversity is the “who,” the mix. Diversity is the mix of differences that make a difference. Inclusion is the goal. Inclusion is the “what,” the mix feeling valued and engaged. Plainly, inclusion happens when the mix feels valued. Inclusion is leveraging differences to increase opportunities for all. You may have heard the expression, “Great minds think alike.” But when it comes to achieving breakthrough levels of innovation and performance, the best minds are those that don’t think alike. Organizations that recruit and retain a diverse workforce reap numerous benefits, including improved team problem solving and increased understanding of the marketplace. Unconscious bias occurs when a person is not aware of the bias in his or her favorable and unfavorable assessments, actions, and decisions toward members of specific groups. Beyond hidden or unconscious bias, there are still examples of open and blatant prejudice and discrimination in organizations. Prejudice is the tendency to view people who are different as being deficient. Discrimination occurs when someone acts out their negative attitudes toward people who are the targets of their prejudice. Stereotypes are a rigid, exaggerated, irrational belief associated with a particular group of people. To be successful managing diversity, managers need to eliminate harmful stereotypes from their thinking, shedding any biases that negatively affect the workplace. Managers can learn to value differences, which means that they recognize individual differences and see these differences with an appreciative attitude. To facilitate this attitude, managers can learn about cultural patterns and typical beliefs of groups to help understand why people act the way they do.

Inclusion will actually CHANGE our rooms. Inclusion GIVES people the ability to express themselves authentically. The work of our society cannot focus on simply folks being in the room anymore. She earned her bachelors from Guilford College majoring in Political Science, Philosophy, and African American Studies. She was an active college student helping to start an Anti-Racism team at Guilford College, responsible for organizing city-wide diversity/inclusion events, and developed coursework focusing on race and racism. After college, Ms. Matthews served as an AmeriCorps Vista North Carolina Campus Compact Multicultural Service Coordinator. Her focus was facilitating, organizing, and training students to work in multicultural communities. In 2016, Ms. Matthews co-founded Dimensions of Isms with Ginger Bakos. What started out as a three-part workshop on diversity issues (racism, classism, sexism) became a grassroots organization. The vision for Dimensions of Isms is to bring awareness and progression to societal issues through training in corporate environments, church workshops, speaking engagements, and other civil and social organizations. Human Resource Strategy and Planning
The strategy an organization follows is its plan for how to compete successfully, survive, and grow. Many organizations have a relatively formal process for developing a written strategy encompassing a certain period of time, with objectives and goals identified for each business unit. Strategic planning is the process of defining organizational strategy, or direction, and allocating resources (capital and people) toward its achievement. Effective strategy often relies on managers who are willing to closely assess current conditions and develop a game plan that enables the firm to overcome obstacles and sustain success. Strategic HR management refers to the appropriate use of HR management practices to gain or keep a competitive advantage. An important way HR professionals can contribute to strategy is by introducing high-performance approaches into the workplace that lead to increased performance. Forecasting uses information from the past and present to predict future conditions. Positive HR planning can be a source of competitive advantage for organizations. This is true because planning helps companies identify their future needs and how to get the right employees to satisfy these needs, thus making the hiring process more efficient. HR metrics are specific measures of HR practices. Unlike financial reporting, there is not yet a standard for the implementation and reporting of HR measures. Managers choose what and how to report to employees, investors, and other interested parties. Benchmarking is the process of comparing an organization’s business results to industry standards or best practices. The balanced scorecard is a framework organizations use to report on a diverse set of performance measures. Results in each of these four areas determine if the organization is progressing toward its strategic objectives. Measuring the benefits of human capital is equally important because it shows how effective HR practices help an organization and its employees. A variety of financial measures can be assessed to show the contribution human capital makes to organizational results. Without such measures, it would be difficult to know what is going on in the organization, identify performance gaps, and provide feedback. Managers should require the same level of rigor in measuring HR practices as they do for other functions in the organization.

How to Execute Strategy
Crafting and executing strategy are the heart and soul of managing a business enterprise. But exactly what is involved in developing a strategy and executing it proficiently? Strategy formulation is the process by which an organization chooses the most appropriate courses of action to achieve its defined goals. The managerial process of crafting and executing a company’s strategy is an ongoing, continuous process consisting of five integrated stages. The first three stages of the strategic management process make up a strategic plan. A strategic plan maps out where a company is headed, establishes strategic and financial targets, and outlines the competitive moves and approaches to be used in achieving the desired business results. A strategic vision describes “where we are going” - the course and direction management has charted and the company’s future. A strategic vision has little value to the organization unless it’s effectively communicated down the line to lower-level managers and employees. An effectively communicated vision is a valuable management tool for enlisting the commitment of company personnel to engage in actions that move the company in the intended direction. A mission statement typically describes the present and purpose of an organization (“who we are, what we do, and why we are here”). A mission statement that provides scant indication of “who we are and what we do” has no apparent value. A company’s values are the beliefs, traits, and behavioral norms that company personnel are expected to display in conducting the company’s business and pursuing its strategic vision and mission. At such values-driven companies, executives “walk the talk” and company personnel are held accountable for displaying the stated values. Objectives are an organization’s performance targets - the results management wants to achieve. The balanced scorecard is a widely used method for combining the use of both strategic and financial objectives, tracking their achievement, and giving management a more complete and balanced view of how well an organization is performing. Objective setting is thus a top-down process that must extend to the lowest organizational levels. And it means that each organizational unit must take care to set performance targets that support - rather than conflict with or negate - the achievement of companywide strategic and financial objectives. In most companies, crafting strategy is a collaborative team effort that includes managers in various positions and at various organizational levels. Crafting strategy is rarely something only high-level executives do. Crafting a full-fledged strategy involves four distinct types of strategic actions and initiatives, each undertaken at different levels of the organization and partially or wholly crafted by managers at different organizational levels. The larger and more diverse the operations of an enterprise, the more points of strategic initiative it will have and the more managers at different organizational levels will have a relevant strategy-making role. The task of implementing and executing the strategy also necessitates an ongoing analysis of the efficiency and effectiveness of a company’s internal activities and a managerial awareness of new technological developments that might improve business processes. Successful organizations achieve operating excellence and execute strategy proficiently. Strategy execution is about getting your strategy done - the successful implementation of a strategic plan. A company’s vision, objectives, strategy, and approach to strategy execution are never final; managing strategy is an ongoing process, not an every-now-and-then task.

MBSE Implementation Across Diverse Domains
INCOSE Enchantment Chapter Meeting February 14, 2018 Presented by: Dr. Ron Carson, Seattle Pacific University Download slides or learn more about the chapter at www.incose.org/enchantment Abstract: This presentation discusses some necessary considerations in selecting MBSE strategy, processes, and tools. These considerations include the variety of organizational products and services, size and complexity of products and services, phases of the life cycle, and organizational knowledge and culture regarding systems engineering, modeling, and complex, data-based-driven tools. Therefore diversity itself is a multi-dimensional function of organizational history and future plans for products, services, and organizational skills. This situation is made more complicated by a desire not to compromise near-term business performance while introducing new organizational capability.
