Ethics, Social Responsibility and Diversity (Part C)
Managing Diverse Workforces The workforce has become much more diverse during the last 30 years. Diversity refers to differences among people such as age, gender, race, religion. Diversity is an ethical and social responsibility issue. Managers need to give all workers equal opportunities. Not following this is against the law and unethical. When all have equal opportunity, the organization benefits. Types of Diversity Manage Diversity Distributive Justice: dictates members be treated fairly concerning pay raises, promotions, office space and similar issues. These rewards should be assigned based on merit and performance. A legal requirement that is becoming more prevalent in American business. Procedural Justice: Managers should use fair practices to determine how to distribute outcomes to members. This involves how managers appraise worker performance or decide who to layoff. Diversity Makes Business Sense Diverse employees provide new, different points of view. Customers are also diverse. Still, some employees may be treated unfairly. Biases: systematic tendencies to use information in ways that result in inaccurate perceptions. People often view those like themselves positively and have biases about others. Social status is a type of bias conferred to people of differing social position. Stereotypes: inaccurate beliefs about a given group.

Boosting Growth through Diversity in Financial Leadership
Boosting Growth through Diversity in Financial Leadership Globally, women lag men across the financial sector. They are underrepresented at all levels of the global financial system, from depositors and borrowers to private equity to regulators and bank board members. David Lipton, the First Deputy Managing Director, International Monetary Fund, said that of the 1.7 billion people who do not have a basic bank account, 1 billion are women. He said lower access to bank credit, for example, robs people the opportunity to provide education to children. In his welcome remarks, Hans Peter Lankes, IFC’s Vice President of Economics and Private Sector Development, said achieving better outcomes for women and improving businesses performance should not be mutually exclusive. Studies show that diversity at the board and management levels leads to improved decision-making of teams, helping boost innovation, productivity, and financial stability. In the panel discussion that followed—moderated by Bloomberg News Reporter, Saleha Mohsin—Afsaneh Mashayekhi Beschloss, CEO of the investment firm RockCreek, noted that if companies and funds want to increase diversity they have to do a better job in providing internship opportunities to diverse groups. In addition to internship opportunities, the financial sector needs to have mentors who can advise women, the panelists said. Mohsin pointed out that women also need to look for allies in their organizations who can support in advancing their career. Discussing some of the challenges, Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus, the Governor of the Central Bank of Malaysia, pointed out that lack of caregiving is a barrier for women in progressing in their careers. She described her experience of helping build a childcare center for 400 children, so women could balance their family life with work—without sacrificing their careers. Another problem is violence against women, including in the workplace. Such violence “cuts the soul of the institutions,” Lipton said, noting that the violence has a ripple effect, hurting women, companies, and economies. David Marsh, the Chairman of the Official Monetary and Financial Institutions Forum, said it is disheartening to see a lack of women at the top levels of sovereign funds as well as at central banks of various countries. He noted that we need more female governors at the central banks of countries—there has been a decline in recent times. The Q&A session for the event kicked off much earlier than usual, lasting for about 30 minutes. The session concluded with a lively exchange of perspectives between the panelists and audience. Successful leadership: Pressing the "like" button on your co-workers | Robert Szasz | TEDxNorrköping
During the past years, there has been a shift in society as an effect of the digital development. New sciences show that we have developed an addiction to social recognition. Meanwhile managers struggle to lead generation Z and Y. So what does it take to become a successful leader 2019? Robert presents experience from his own stepping in as a manager recently in a troubled elderly care organisation. How real live "likes" and creating forums for discussions, how media recognition and continuously encouraging the co-workers to promote their workplaces, can help us understand and learn from the impact the digital developments has had on society in order to enable us to lead generation Z and Y successfully. Robert Szasz is currently employed at one of Linkoping's largest organizations within elderly care as an operation manager for several units/facilities. Robert has a broad diversity of previous experiences. In 2015 he completed his masters degree within sport psychology and have since, worked as a sport psychological consultant for some of the largest international firms within the e-sport scene. Robert has also worked with management for the Swedish educational system and later on with recruiting and organizing foster family homes and contact persons within the social services. The End of Enterprise Content Management – What Happened to Content is King?
We discuss intelligent content services. Microsoft has launched an entire global program to support them. Gartner has declared enterprise content management dead. And your organization is supposed to do what now? Focusing primarily on compliance and risk management, this webinar explores the role of intelligent content services, their components, and how they can impact your unique content plans. Organizations must now rethink their strategies and the tools they buy – one size does not fit all. The notion that a single monolithic solution can address an enterprise's content needs is no longer realistic. Content is increasingly distributed and diverse, and the tools, applications, and requirements for its management differ vastly, depending on audience and use case. This session demonstrates the tools to deliver intelligent content services, and examines their value within a Microsoft environment. Crucial Skills Every Chief Diversity Officer Needs
Kevin McDonald, chief diversity, equity, and inclusion officer at the University of Missouri System, outlines the essential skills chief diversity officers need in their toolkit, such as political savvy and the ability to strategically apply metric-driven approaches.
Why and how to diversity your college and university relations talent acquisition team
Study after study prove that the more diverse a workforce, the more productive is that workforce. Yet many of the organizations who recruit dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of college and university students and recent graduates from one-, two-, and four-year colleges and universities do so with teams which are anything but diverse. In this 30-minute webcast, Kelton Legend CEO, Kimberly Jones, will discuss these issues with College Recruiter Founder, Steven Rothberg. Kimberly is a Global Talent Acquisition Strategist who has worked for some of the most recognized corporate brands. In her most recent role as the Talent Acquisition Director at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), she managed JPL’s recruiting team in the continuous recruitment of talent from early career to senior level positions. Prior to joining JPL she enjoyed a wealth of experiences at Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems, GE Aviation, Raytheon, Honda, and Nationwide. Her 20+ years of experience have allowed her to learn and thrive in a variety of industries and corporate environments. She’s been fortunate to lead and be a member of recruiting teams that sought to recruit the best and brightest both nationally and internationally. She has developed and implemented comprehensive recruiting strategies for organizations whose needs included accounting, administrative staff, business operations, communications, engineering, finance, human resources, IT, manufacturing, scientist, and skilled labor. One of her most rewarding and challenging assignments occurred while working at Raytheon as the Recruiting and Diversity Manager for Raytheon Polar Services. The Polar Services team, assigned to the primary contract for National Science Foundation, staffed all program positions at the headquarters location in Denver, CO along with contractors deployed to Antarctica: Palmer Station, McMurdo Station, and South Pole. Kimberly successfully completed a 6 week deployment to Antarctica including time spent at South Pole. While at Nationwide she was responsible for managing internship programs for United Negro College Fund, INROADS, Hispanic Scholarship Fund, and the Tom Joyner Foundation. Kimberly is a graduate of Wilberforce University, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Management. She has obtained designations in Six Sigma, SHRM PHR, Certified Project Manager, and Certified Internet Recruiter. Kimberly is from Columbus, OH and maintains office locations in both California and Ohio. BirdsCaribbean Brings Diverse People Together to Conserve Birds
We wrap up our series of our 30th Anniversary celebrations with this final video. In the Caribbean we celebrate not only the diversity of our birds (172 bird species found only in the region!), but also our members. For 30 years we have brought people together from dozens of countries to learn from each other, share ideas, and forge friendships and partnerships. Our members often attest to how much they value our network for the support and inspiration that it provides. It gives us the strength to keep going in the face of many challenges. And sometimes our members even fall in love. First up is Jessica Rozek, graduate student at Tufts University. Jessica is studying sustainable use of wetlands in Trinidad and important stopover and wintering sites for shorebirds in the Caribbean. Jessica joined BirdsCaribbean in 2016 and has been an active member ever since. She is on the editorial board of the Journal of Caribbean Ornithology and a contributor to our blog. As our Waterbird Program Manager, Jessica is coordinating our upcoming Conserving Caribbean Shorebirds and their Habitats Workshop in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico and our Caribbean Waterbird Census Small Grants program. Ingrid Flores worked for four years as Regional Coordinator of our Caribbean Endemic Bird and International Migratory Bird Festivals. The festivals introduce people to the joy and beauty oif local birds. They also help people understand how these birds are part of each island’s natural heritage and it is up to local communities to conserve them. Ingrid helped coordinators organize activities, shipped out materials, and managed social media around the festivals and bird education. She is passionate about Caribbean birds and encouraging people to become involved. Justin Proctor is our dashing and debonair Vice President,  Managing Editor at the Journal of Caribbean Ornithology, and lead organizer of our 22nd International Conference in Guadeloupe, July 2019. If biology does not work out for him as a career, we think he will make it in advertising. Glenroy Gaymes is the Chief Wildlife Officer in the Forestry Dept in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. He is well-known as a local expert on all aspects of the country’s flora and fauna, and is involved in many conservation initatives. Glenroy is also a founding member of SCIENCE, a local NGO. Together with member Lystra Culzac and other SCIENCE officers, Glenroy is active in teaching youth and local people about birds. His team carries out our BirdSleuth Caribbean program with school clubs and summer camps. He is also active as a local bird guide to residents and visitors alike. Maydiel Canizares is a Cuban Biologist. For the past five years, he worked as a Biologist in the protected areas of Zapata Swamp Biosphere Reserve. Twenty three of the 28 endemic birds of Cuba can be seen here, in addition to ~300 resident and migratory birds. It’s a very important place for migration, featuring many types of diverse habitats. It’s also an Important Bird Area (IBA) and a Ramsar site. Two big conservation initiatives in Zapata Swamp that Maydiel worked on are: 1) encouraging locals to landscape with native plants (which will help endemics like the Bee Hummingbird), and 2) installing nest boxes for threatened psittacid species: the Cuban Parakeet and the Cuban Parrot. Maydiel is also an experienced bird guide and led several of BirdsCaribbean’s bird tours at our conference in Cuba in 2017. Jen Mortenson is a Post Doctoral Fellow at the University of Arkansas . Through her PhD research Jen was able to provide key data and recommendations for the first conservation plan of the White-breasted Thrasher, an endangered bird found only on St Lucia and Martinique. You can read about Jen's exciting research here. We are grateful to Jen for this important work and so happy to have her as an active member of BirdsCaribbean. Lisa Sorenson (Executive Director) and Jennifer Wheeler (recently retired Treasurer) are well-known to the BirdsCaribbean community for their many years of service in developing programs, raising funds, helping partners, and keeping the organization running smoothly. They had fun wishing BirdsCaribbean a very happy 30th birthday. Editor’s note: After many months of paperwork and a visit to the US Embassy in Guyana, Maydiel immigrated to the US this past October. He and Jessica  married in November 2018, the second BirdsCaribbean couple that we know of – congratulations!!! Sincere thanks to Esther Figueroa (Vagabond Media) for putting together this video and Ingrid Flores, JC Fernández-Ordóñez, and José Colón-López for Spanish translation.  Thank you to José (Pepe) González Díaz and Felisa (Fela) Collazo Torres  for the video footage of the Green Mango (hummingbird) in Puerto Rico feeding on one of our donated feeders after Hurricane Maria devastated the island. Golden Swallow photograph is by Dax Roman. Special thanks to our members, partners and supporters who make this work possible!!!

Beyond the positive bottom-line impacts of diversity and inclusion, Celeste Warren, VP of Human Resources and Global Diversity and Inclusion at Merck, believes “there is an awakening” happening as it relates to how organizations should approach diversity and inclusion. Employees don’t leave what’s happening inside their families and communities at the doorstep of work. Organizations and leaders have to understand and be prepared to engage workers in what once was considered too personal or touchy topics.  “We can’t expect people to just turn it off when they come into the work environment,” says Warren in my recent interview with her where she shared five tips for leading inclusively. Here are 5 Tips to Be a Better Inclusive Leader 1. Develop a listening and empathetic ear “[Leaders must] create an environment where they open their doors and listen,” says Warren. "They don’t have to have all the answers because that would be highly improbable but a listening and empathetic ear can help create an environment where employees are more productive and engaged." 2. Understand the varying generational definitions of diversity Baby Boomers and Generation X tend to define diversity along the traditional lines of gender, race, and ethnicity. However, Millennials and Generation Z tend to define diversity more multi-layered ways.  "Generation Z thinks more diversely because they’ve been surrounded by diverse, global perspectives through social media and other technology,” says Warren. The emerging generations also view diversity and inclusion as fundamental to the way a company does business, more so than previous generations. In fact, 53 percent of Millennials would leave their current organization for a more inclusive one and 30 percent have left an organization for a more inclusive one. 3. Embody these inclusive characteristics According to Warren, there are five characteristics inclusive leaders need to embody. 1. Collaborative 2. Great listeners 3. High yearning to learn 4. Perceptive and self-aware of potential unconscious bias that may hinder decision-making 5. Bring the best out of themselves and others 4. Know when not to have the answer "An inclusive leader knows when to have the answers and when to let the team figure it out,” says Warren. “If the answer is ‘no’, leaders should provide the context and encourage employees to come back [to the leader] in the future." Inclusive leaders must be self-aware enough to know when they don’t have the answer and they have to be perceptive enough to know who on the team might have a similar working style or background that might be better equipped to address the issue.  5. Nurture creativity and innovation "Create strong group dynamics and an environment where people feel energized, empowered, and engaged to speak their minds,” says Warren. "An inclusive leader should have the ability to unleash the creativity of their team, achieve predetermined objectives, and see the larger opportunities that exist for the team and organization."
